Guidance Through Protection From Abuse Cases

The Protection From Abuse Act allows family members, household members, and current or former intimate partners to ask a court for protection from abuse. The process begins with a petition filed at the county courthouse describing what happened and what protection is being requested, and a judge can issue a temporary order the same day if needed. A final hearing follows, where both sides have the chance to present their case before the court decides whether to enter a final order, which can last up to three years and may address contact, residence, custody, and support.
